Summary

Electroencephalograms (EEGs) reveal that occipital alpha rhythms slow with age in people with Down syndrome (DS). This slowing, observed in older DS adults, did not correlate with daily life function decline.

Background:

  • Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder associated with intellectual disability.
  • Age-related changes in brain activity are not fully understood in DS.
  • Electroencephalography (EEG) can measure brain electrical activity.

Observation:

  • EEG recordings were analyzed from 40 individuals with DS, 42 individuals with mental retardation (MR) without DS, and 47 healthy volunteers.
  • Occipital alpha rhythm frequencies were measured across different age groups.

Findings:

  • Alpha rhythm frequencies decreased with age in subjects with Down syndrome.
  • In individuals over 35 years old, DS subjects exhibited significantly slower alpha rhythms compared to MR subjects.
  • Slowing of alpha rhythm in older DS subjects was associated with increased 6-8 Hz slow activity.
  • This EEG slowing did not correlate with a decline in activities of daily living (ADL) as assessed by the GBS score.
  • CT scans of 21 DS subjects showed no age-related morphometric changes.

Implications:

  • Age-related slowing of occipital alpha rhythms is a characteristic finding in Down syndrome.
  • These EEG changes may serve as a biomarker for neurological aging in DS.
  • Further research is needed to understand the clinical significance of these EEG alterations and their relationship to cognitive function and brain structure.
