    Summary

Protein-losing enteropathy can complicate cardiac conditions. Surgical repair of a superior vena cava conduit obstruction successfully resolved this complication in a Mustard procedure patient.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Surgical Complications

    Background:

    • Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a known complication associated with various cardiac diseases.
    • The Mustard procedure is a complex surgical intervention for treating certain congenital heart defects.

    Observation:

    • A patient developed protein-losing enteropathy as a late complication following a Mustard procedure.
    • The enteropathy was linked to an obstructed superior vena cava conduit, a component of the surgical repair.

    Findings:

    • Surgical intervention to repair the obstructed superior vena cava conduit was performed.
    • Following the surgical repair, the patient's protein-losing enteropathy resolved completely.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights a rare but significant late surgical complication of the Mustard procedure.
    • Successful surgical management of conduit obstruction can effectively treat associated protein-losing enteropathy.
    • Further investigation into the mechanisms linking cardiac surgery complications and gastrointestinal issues may be warranted.
