Summary

Pediatric lung imaging in children with HIV often shows diffuse reticulonodular patterns. Lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP) correlates with these radiographic findings, particularly linear patterns.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Radiology
  • Pulmonology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Children's Hospital Aids Program (CHAP) follows children with HIV.
  • Radiographic lung patterns in this population are not fully characterized.
  • Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP) are common pulmonary complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the radiographic patterns of lung disease in children with HIV.
  • To correlate radiographic findings with histopathological diagnoses, specifically PLH/LIP.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of chest radiographs from children in the CHAP.
  • Analysis of radiographic patterns including reticulonodular, consolidation, and linear patterns.
  • Correlation of radiographic findings with lung biopsy results.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A diffuse reticulonodular pattern was the most consistent radiographic finding.
  • Lung consolidation and nodular patterns were also observed.
  • Lymphoid infiltration of PLH/LIP correlated with radiographic patterns, especially prominent linear patterns.

Conclusions:

  • Radiographic findings in children with HIV are diverse but often include reticulonodular patterns.
  • PLH/LIP is associated with specific radiographic presentations, including linear lung patterns.
  • Imaging findings can suggest underlying lymphoid infiltration in pediatric HIV.
