Background:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and debilitating mental health condition.
  • Current treatments for MDD, including antidepressants, can have delayed onset of action.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy and safety of combining total sleep deprivation (SD) with nortriptyline for treating major depressive disorder (MDD).
  • To identify predictors of response to this combined treatment regimen.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty patients diagnosed with MDD underwent a 36-hour total sleep deprivation (SD) procedure.
  • Nortriptyline was initiated on the evening following SD, with patients monitored for two weeks.
