Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare static accommodative function in individuals with normal vision and those with congenital nystagmus.
  • To investigate specific components of accommodation, including stimulus/response slope, controller gain, tonic accommodation, and depth-of-focus.

Main Methods:

  • Monocular steady-state accommodation components were assessed using a Hartinger coincidence-optometer.
  • Depth-of-focus was determined psychophysically.
  • Patients with nystagmus were analyzed for differences based on etiology (albinotic vs. idiopathic).

  • While the mean accommodative stimulus/response function slope did not differ significantly, its variability was markedly increased in the nystagmus group.

  • Increased depth-of-focus is a primary contributor to anomalous accommodative behavior in congenital nystagmus.
  • This may be linked to abnormal fixational eye movements, eccentric fixation, and reduced visual sensitivity due to early visual experience.
