Arterial oxygen desaturation during oesophago-gastro duodenoscopy (OGD) is common but preventable with oxygen. This study found no link between desaturation and arrhythmias in elderly patients undergoing OGD.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Cardiology
  • Critical Care Medicine

Background:

  • Arterial oxygen desaturation is a recognized complication during oesophago-gastro duodenoscopy (OGD).
  • Severe desaturation may potentially trigger cardiac arrhythmias, particularly in elderly patients or those with cardiopulmonary conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between arterial oxygen desaturation and cardiac arrhythmias in elderly patients undergoing OGD.
  • To assess the effectiveness of oxygen administration in preventing desaturation and its associated hemodynamic effects during OGD.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study involving 106 elderly patients undergoing OGD.
  • Continuous monitoring of arterial oxygen saturation and cardiac rhythm.
  • Oxygen administered via nasal cannulae as needed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Twenty-six patients (24.5%) developed ventricular and/or supraventricular ectopics.
  • No significant correlation was found between the degree of oxygen desaturation and the occurrence of arrhythmias.
  • One case of vasovagal syncope was recorded, successfully treated with atropine.
  • Oxygen administration effectively prevented significant arterial oxygen desaturation without adverse hemodynamic effects.

Conclusions:

  • Arterial oxygen desaturation during OGD in the elderly is easily preventable with supplemental oxygen.
  • The study did not establish a link between desaturation and cardiac arrhythmias in this patient group.
  • Routine cardiac and oxygen saturation monitoring during OGD is recommended for early problem identification.
