Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Existing research indicates a link between cigarette smoking and depression.
  • The health implications of smoking extend to severe outcomes, including suicide.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between cigarette consumption and suicide risk.
  • To quantify the increased risk of suicide among female smokers.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study of over 100,000 registered nurses.
  • Data collected via biannual questionnaires from 1976 to 1988.
  • Analysis comparing suicide rates based on smoking status.

Main Results:

  • Smokers had a significantly higher risk of suicide compared to never-smokers.
  • Those smoking 1-24 cigarettes/day had double the risk.
  • Those smoking 25+ cigarettes/day had four times the risk.

Conclusions:

  • Cigarette smoking is associated with a substantially increased risk of suicide.
  • This study reinforces smoking as a critical public health issue.
  • Further research may explore causal mechanisms linking smoking and suicide.
