Summary

Ciliocytophthoria, remnants of ciliated cells, were found in peritoneal dialysis fluid. These findings are common in young women and not indicative of infection.

Background:

  • Ciliocytophthoria are anucleate remnants of ciliated epithelial cells.
  • They originate from the lower respiratory tract and female reproductive tract.

Observation:

  • A case of ciliocytophthoria was identified in the effluent dialysis fluid of a young woman on peritoneal dialysis.
  • Initial misidentification prompted a search for parasitic infection.

Findings:

  • Prospective study revealed frequent occurrence of ciliated cell remnants in young women's dialysate.
  • These remnants were not observed in older women or men.

Implications:

  • Ciliocytophthoria are a common, benign finding in the peritoneal dialysate of young women.
  • Laboratory personnel should be aware of these findings with increasing use of peritoneal dialysis.
