    Area of Science:

    • Traffic Safety Research
    • Forensic Toxicology
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Motorcycle crashes are a significant cause of traffic fatalities.
    • Alcohol impairment is a known risk factor in motor vehicle accidents.
    • Understanding the prevalence of alcohol involvement in fatal motorcycle crashes is crucial for prevention.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To retrospectively analyze the role of alcohol in fatal motorcycle crashes in Maryland.
    • To determine the prevalence of alcohol impairment among fatally injured motorcycle drivers.
    • To identify demographic patterns associated with alcohol involvement.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 99 fatal motorcycle crashes in Maryland.
    • Analysis of police and medical examiner records.
    • Determination of blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) for 62 drivers.

    Main Results:

    • Measurable alcohol levels were found in 65% (41/62) of drivers.
    • Illegal BAC (≥100 mg/100 ml) was present in 50% (31/62) of drivers.
    • Alcohol involvement was most common in drivers aged 20-34.
    • Police reports mentioned alcohol in only 9 instances, indicating underreporting.

    Conclusions:

    • Alcohol impairment is highly prevalent among drivers involved in fatal motorcycle crashes.
    • There is a significant underreporting of alcohol involvement in official crash records.
    • Targeted prevention strategies for younger drivers may be warranted.
