    Summary

This study found that high school students in New Haven showed a progressive pattern of multiple-drug use, including alcohol, marijuana, and harder drugs. Cigarettes and glue were not part of this progression.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Sociology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Multiple-drug use research is a growing field.
    • Previous studies suggest a progressive pattern in polydrug use.
    • Patterns of polydrug use can vary across different populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To examine the patterns of multiple-drug use among high school students.
    • To determine if multiple-drug use follows a progressive pattern in adolescents.
    • To identify specific drugs involved in the progression of polydrug use.

    Main Methods:

    • A random sample of 1,094 high school students was surveyed.
    • Data was collected during the 1972-1973 academic school year in greater New Haven, Conn.
    • Scalogram analysis was employed to analyze drug use patterns.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Scalogram analysis revealed a progressive relationship for nine drugs: alcohol, marijuana, hashish, barbiturates, amphetamines, LSD, mescaline, cocaine, and heroin.
    • Cigarettes and glue did not fit into the observed progressive pattern of drug use.
    • The temporal order of drug initiation partially supported the scalogram analysis findings.

    Conclusions:

    • Adolescent polydrug use, including a range of substances from alcohol to heroin, appears to be a progressive phenomenon.
    • The findings contribute to understanding the developmental trajectory of substance use in adolescents.
    • Further research is needed to fully understand the temporal aspects and variations in polydrug use patterns.
