Summary

Female children with labial fusion have a higher risk of bacteriuria (urinary tract infections). Urine cultures are recommended for girls with labial fusion, and labial fusion should be checked in girls with bacteriuria.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of bacteriuria in female children with labial fusion.
  • To determine if labial fusion is a risk factor for bacteriuria.
  • To establish recommendations for screening and diagnosis.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted.
  • Thirty-three female children with labial fusion were screened for bacteriuria.
  • A control group of 33 girls without labial fusion was included for comparison.
  • Bacteriuria was defined as the growth of a single microorganism with <= 100,000 colony-forming units/ml in urine specimens.

Main Results:

  • Six out of 33 girls (18.2%) with labial fusion presented with bacteriuria.
  • None of the 33 girls in the control group had bacteriuria.
  • This suggests a statistically significant association between labial fusion and bacteriuria.
