High rates of hepatitis A, B, C, and D virus infections were found in intravenous drug users in Rome. Needle sharing significantly contributes to the spread of these viral infections within this population.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Intravenous drug abusers (IVDA) are a high-risk population for viral hepatitis infections.
  • Understanding the prevalence of hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis D virus (HDV) is crucial for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of HAV, HBV, HCV, and HDV infection markers in asymptomatic drug abusers.
  • To evaluate the role of potential risk factors, such as needle sharing and duration of drug use, in the transmission of these viruses.

Main Methods:

  • A seroepidemiological survey was conducted among 645 asymptomatic individuals with a history of injecting heroin.
  • Participants were recruited from methadone maintenance centers in Rome.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Sera were tested for antibodies against HAV, HBV, HCV, and HDV.
  • Main Results:

    • High prevalence rates were observed for all tested hepatitis viruses: 63.4% for HCV, 65% for HBV, 13.3% for HDV, and 50.9% for HAV.
    • Anti-HCV prevalence correlated with serological evidence of HBV infection.
    • A significant correlation was found between HCV antibodies and a history of drug addiction exceeding 5 years.

    Conclusions:

    • Intravenous drug abusers in Rome exhibit substantial circulation of hepatitis viruses.
    • Needle sharing is identified as a critical factor in the transmission of multiple hepatitis infections among IVDA.
    • These findings underscore the need for comprehensive prevention and harm reduction strategies within this population.
