Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Genetics
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Down's syndrome (DS) is associated with autoimmune diseases.
  • The link between DS and celiac disease (CD) requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of celiac disease in individuals with Down's syndrome.
  • To assess the need for routine celiac disease screening in DS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Studied a random sample of 70 individuals with DS.
  • Measured IgA anti-gliadin antibodies (IgA AGAs) and anti-endomysium antibodies (AEAs).
  • Performed jejunal biopsies and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing.

Main Results:

  • 13% of DS individuals had positive IgA AGAs.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 2 out of 8 tested had positive AEAs.
  • 3 out of 8 had flat intestinal mucosa, indicating CD.
  • Calculated a 43% prevalence of CD in the DS cohort.
  • Conclusions:

    • The association between Down's syndrome and celiac disease is significant.
    • Routine screening for celiac disease in DS patients is warranted.
    • Serologic markers like IgA AGA and AEA should be part of DS health assessments.
