Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a global health concern.
  • Progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a critical stage of HIV infection.
  • Cutaneous manifestations are common in HIV-infected individuals.

Observation:

  • Skin and mucous membrane lesions frequently appear in patients with HIV infection.
  • These lesions often precede the development of AIDS.
  • The skin's visibility allows for patient self-monitoring and clinical examination.

Findings:

  • HIV-related skin lesions are prevalent among infected individuals.
  • The presence of specific dermatological conditions can serve as an early indicator of HIV infection.
  • Early detection of HIV through skin manifestations is possible.

Implications:

  • Dermatological screening can facilitate the early diagnosis of HIV infection.
  • Prompt diagnosis allows for timely initiation of antiretroviral therapy.
  • Early intervention can improve patient outcomes and reduce HIV transmission.
