Background:

  • Assessing intrathoracic tracheal dimensions is crucial for diagnosing conditions like tracheomalacia.
  • Normal ranges for tracheal diameter and cross-sectional area during dynamic respiration are not well-established.

Observation:

  • Dynamic computed tomography (CT) scans were performed on ten volunteers during forced inspiration and expiration.
  • Measurements were taken at the level of the brachiocephalic vein to the aortic arch using 3-mm collimation.
  • High-spatial-frequency algorithm was used for image reconstruction.

Findings:

  • The mean tracheal cross-sectional area decreased by 35% from 280 mm² during inspiration to 178 mm² during expiration (P < .001).
  • The percentage decrease in cross-sectional area strongly correlated with decreases in anteroposterior (r = .879) and coronal (r = .916) diameters.
