Breast cancer after mammary augmentation

Background:

• Augmentation mammoplasty is a common procedure.
• The relationship between breast augmentation and breast cancer prognosis is debated.

Observation:

• Nine patients with breast cancer post-augmentation mammoplasty were analyzed.
• The mean interval from augmentation to diagnosis was 6.8 years.
• Patients presented with Stage I (5) or Stage II (4) disease.

Findings:

• Mammography was ineffective for detecting post-augmentation masses.
• Needle aspiration aided nodal disease diagnosis but not primary breast lesions.
• Stage II patients had poorer outcomes, with recurrence or death in 3/4.
• One Stage I patient died with hepatic metastases.

Implications:

• Breast augmentation may delay breast cancer diagnosis due to patient factors and altered imaging.
• Patients with breast cancer after augmentation may have a worse prognosis.
• Preoperative mammography is recommended for augmentation candidates, especially those over 30 or with a family history of breast cancer.
