In individuals with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a single skin lesion can present with both Bowenoid changes and Kaposi's sarcoma. This case highlights the importance of considering multiple diagnoses in HIV-positive patients.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can lead to complex mucocutaneous manifestations.
  • Coexistence of multiple pathogens or neoplasms in a single lesion has been previously reported in HIV-infected individuals.

Observation:

  • A case study of a 31-year-old male with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) presenting with a cutaneous lesion exhibiting both Bowenoid changes and Kaposi's sarcoma.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed Bowen's disease in the epidermis and patch-stage Kaposi's sarcoma in the dermis.
  • Microbiologic cultures and special stains did not detect bacteria, fungi, or mycobacteria.
  • Polymerase chain reaction assays for human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA were negative.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for concurrent neoplastic and infectious disorders in HIV-seropositive patients with mucocutaneous lesions.
  • Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of complex skin lesions in immunocompromised individuals.
