Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) have an increased frequency of cancer, particularly lung and breast cancers. Older age at SSc diagnosis is a risk factor, and lung cancer is linked to pulmonary fibrosis.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Oncology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a chronic autoimmune disease.
  • The potential association between SSc and cancer risk requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the cancer incidence in patients diagnosed with systemic sclerosis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of 248 patients with systemic sclerosis.
  • Prospective follow-up was conducted for all participants.

Main Results:

  • Cancer developed in 7.3% of patients (18/248) over 2,001 patient-years.
  • Lung (7 patients) and breast (5 patients) cancers were most common.
  • Cancer incidence was 2.1 times higher than in the general Ontario population.

Related Experiment Videos

Conclusions:

  • Systemic sclerosis is associated with an elevated risk of cancer.
  • Older age at SSc diagnosis and pulmonary fibrosis are risk factors for specific cancers.
