Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Visual Neuroscience

Background:

  • Perimetry is the standard glaucoma examination.
  • Contrast sensitivity is a proposed complementary test for glaucoma diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between perimetry and contrast sensitivity test outcomes in glaucoma patients.
  • To determine the clinical utility of contrast sensitivity as an adjunct to perimetry.

Main Methods:

  • Tested 44 glaucoma patients and 16 glaucoma suspects using Haag-Streit Visometer and Octopus 201 perimeter (program G1).
  • Analyzed correlations between contrast sensitivity measurements and visual field parameters.

Main Results:

  • Contrast sensitivity strongly correlated with the central visual field (Spearman's rho = 0.76; P < 0.001).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Moderate correlation observed between contrast sensitivity and mean visual field sensitivity (rho = 0.63; P < 0.001).
  • Weak correlations found between mean contrast sensitivity and corrected loss variance/short-term fluctuation.
  • Conclusions:

    • Perimetry and contrast sensitivity tests yield highly correlated results in glaucoma.
    • Contrast sensitivity testing is a valuable complementary test, particularly for evaluating the central visual field.
    • Recommend assessing the central visual field when contrast sensitivity testing is unavailable.
