Summary

Cellular dispersion in the developing brain is a key process. This study reveals progenitor cell dispersion as a novel mechanism for widespread sibling cell dispersal in the rat cerebral cortex.

Main Results:

  • Initially, sibling cells exhibited radial alignment by day E18 (3 days post-infection).
  • By day E20/21 (6 days post-infection), 43% of cortical clones showed non-radial dispersion exceeding 500 microns.
  • Four clones dispersed longitudinally over 2 mm, indicating high dispersion rates (>15 microns/hour), with some sibling cells found in proliferative zones and even the olfactory bulb.

Conclusions:

  • Progenitor cell dispersion is identified as a previously unrecognized mode of migration in the developing forebrain.
  • This process contributes significantly to the wide dispersal of sibling cells within the developing cerebral cortex and beyond.
