Summary

Lactulose therapy did not significantly alter human intestinal methanogen populations. Methanogens were prevalent in both treated and control groups, with wide variations in numbers observed.

  • Quantification of methanogens in fecal samples from ten lactulose-treated subjects and ten healthy controls.

  • Methanogens were detected in 90% of all subjects (9 treated, 9 controls).
