Summary

Chronic terbutaline therapy, used orally or via infusion, is linked to increased glucose intolerance. Women on terbutaline show higher glucose levels and abnormal glucose tolerance test results, necessitating monitoring.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Endocrinology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Terbutaline is a beta-mimetic agent used to manage preterm labor.
  • The metabolic effects of chronic terbutaline administration require thorough investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between chronic terbutaline therapy and glucose intolerance.
  • To compare glucose tolerance in women receiving oral terbutaline versus continuous subcutaneous infusion versus no beta-mimetic therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-nine women receiving terbutaline (oral or subcutaneous infusion) were compared to 82 controls.
  • Gestational diabetes screening involved a 1-hour 50-g glucose tolerance test (GTT) and a 3-hour 100-g GTT for abnormal results.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Terbutaline users exhibited significantly higher mean glucose concentrations post-GTT compared to controls.
  • The incidence of abnormal 3-hour 100-g GTT results was significantly higher in women receiving continuous subcutaneous terbutaline infusion (20% vs. 4%).

Conclusions:

  • Chronic terbutaline use, irrespective of administration route, is associated with increased glucose intolerance.
  • Routine surveillance of glucose tolerance is recommended for patients on long-term terbutaline therapy.
