Summary

This study reviews 35 cases of nonparasitic abdominal serous cysts, finding their size dictates symptoms. Diagnosis often relies on ultrasonography, though surgical intervention like cystectomy yields excellent outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Abdominal Surgery
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Nonparasitic abdominal serous cysts are rare conditions.
  • These cysts can occur in various abdominal organs, most commonly the liver, but also kidneys, spleen, pancreas, adrenals, and mesentery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the diagnostic and therapeutic features of nonparasitic abdominal serous cysts.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of different diagnostic and surgical approaches.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 35 patients with nonparasitic abdominal serous cysts.
  • Analysis of clinical presentation, diagnostic imaging (primarily ultrasonography), and surgical procedures.
  • Evaluation of immediate and late postoperative outcomes.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Cyst size, not location, primarily determined clinical symptoms.
  • Ultrasonography was effective for detection but had limitations in precise visceral localization (6 errors).
  • Confusion with hydatid cysts occurred due to low incidence and lack of specific diagnostic markers, especially for solitary cysts.
  • Partial cystectomy (18 cases) and total cystectomy (8 cases) were common surgical procedures.
  • A novel technique involving cavity obliteration was used in two patients.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical approach selection depends on cyst size, site, and number.
  • Both standard and novel surgical techniques resulted in very good immediate and late postoperative outcomes.
  • Nonparasitic abdominal serous cysts require careful diagnosis and tailored surgical management.
