Summary

High-resolution computed tomography (CT) effectively identified lumbar disk herniations missed by MRI and myelography. Surgical decompression relieved radicular pain in all treated patients.

Background:

  • Thirteen patients with foraminal or extraforaminal lumbar disk herniation were evaluated.
  • Myelography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) had limited diagnostic utility in identifying the herniated lesions.
  • High-resolution computed tomography (CT) successfully visualized the herniated discs in all cases.

Findings:

  • High-resolution CT provided accurate pre-operative localization of lumbar disk herniations.
  • Surgical intervention involving disk fragment removal and nerve root decompression was performed.
  • All patients experienced relief from radicular pain following surgical treatment.
