High-resolution computed tomography (CT) effectively identified lumbar disk herniations missed by MRI and myelography. Surgical decompression relieved radicular pain in all treated patients.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Radiology
  • Orthopedic Surgery

Background:

  • Lumbar disk herniations can cause debilitating radicular pain.
  • Accurate localization of herniated discs is crucial for effective surgical planning.

Observation:

  • Thirteen patients with foraminal or extraforaminal lumbar disk herniation were evaluated.
  • Myelography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) had limited diagnostic utility in identifying the herniated lesions.
  • High-resolution computed tomography (CT) successfully visualized the herniated discs in all cases.

Findings:

  • High-resolution CT provided accurate pre-operative localization of lumbar disk herniations.
  • Surgical intervention involving disk fragment removal and nerve root decompression was performed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • All patients experienced relief from radicular pain following surgical treatment.
  • Implications:

    • High-resolution CT is a valuable tool for diagnosing challenging lumbar disk herniations.
    • Surgical decompression offers an effective treatment for radicular pain caused by lumbar disk herniation.
    • Improved diagnostic accuracy can lead to better surgical outcomes in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery.
