Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Abdominal tuberculosis presents diagnostic challenges due to nonspecific symptoms.
  • Socioeconomic factors are strongly associated with the incidence of abdominal tuberculosis.
  • Co-infection with pulmonary tuberculosis is common in patients with abdominal disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe findings from a 4-year survey of abdominal tuberculosis cases.
  • To compare current findings with previous surveys.
  • To evaluate diagnostic procedures for abdominal tuberculosis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 82 patients diagnosed with abdominal tuberculosis over 4 years.
  • Review of clinical data, including symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and outcomes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Comparison of diagnostic utility of imaging, endoscopy, and adenosine deaminase levels.
  • Main Results:

    • 14 intestinal, 11 mesenteric-lymphnodal, and 57 peritoneal tuberculosis cases identified.
    • 51 patients (62%) had associated pulmonary tuberculosis.
    • Newer invasive and noninvasive methods, including adenosine deaminase, aided diagnosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Abdominal tuberculosis predominantly affects individuals in lower socioeconomic strata.
    • Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial to avert mortality, despite advancements in diagnostic tools.
    • Adenosine deaminase shows potential as a noninvasive marker for tuberculous ascites.
