Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Genetics
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Pachydermodactyly is a rare digital fibromatosis affecting proximal finger portions.
  • Only nine idiopathic cases, all in young males, have been documented.
  • Tuberous sclerosis is a genetic disorder causing tumors in various organs.

Observation:

  • A 5-year-old Chinese boy with tuberous sclerosis presented with congenital, localized pachydermodactyly.
  • The condition was present from birth.

Findings:

  • This case expands the known presentation of pachydermodactyly.
  • It links congenital pachydermodactyly to tuberous sclerosis.

Implications:

  • Congenital pachydermodactyly may serve as an additional cutaneous sign of tuberous sclerosis.
  • This finding could aid in earlier diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis in pediatric patients.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the genetic and clinical associations between these conditions.
