Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Equine Oncology
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Lymphosarcoma is a common hematopoietic neoplasm in horses.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes.

Observation:

  • A 16-year-old pregnant Dutch Warmblood mare presented with depression, pale mucous membranes, petechiae, ventral edema, and fever.
  • Hematological evaluation showed severe anemia (hematocrit 0.15 L/L) and leukopenia (2.3 G/L) with 96% lymphocytes.

Findings:

  • The mare died despite hospitalization, with necropsy revealing multicentric lymphosarcoma originating in the bone marrow.
  • Neoplastic infiltration of the kidneys was also observed.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the aggressive nature of lymphosarcoma in horses, even in pregnant mares.
  • Accurate hematological and pathological evaluation is essential for diagnosing equine lymphosarcoma.
