Summary

Estrogen replacement therapy did not appear to preserve cognitive function in elderly women. This 15-year study found no significant link between estrogen use and cognitive decline in older women.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if postmenopausal estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) affects cognitive function in elderly women.
  • To determine if estrogen use delays or prevents cognitive decline.

  • A 15-year prospective and cross-sectional study involving 800 women aged 65-95.
  • Estrogen use was assessed at baseline (1972-1974) and follow-up (1988-1991).
  • Cognitive function was evaluated using 12 tests from 8 standard instruments at follow-up.
