Summary

Excimer laser keratectomy effectively treated undercorrected myopia after radial keratotomy. This procedure offered a safer, more predictable method for visual outcome improvement in patients previously unsatisfied with their vision.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Refractive Surgery

Background:

  • Radial keratotomy (RK) for myopia correction often results in unpredictable outcomes.
  • Undercorrected myopia post-RK historically limited treatment options to unpredictable secondary procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of excimer laser keratectomy for augmenting undercorrected myopia following RK.

Main Methods:

  • Excimer laser keratectomy was performed on six eyes of five patients with residual myopia after RK.
  • Pre- and post-treatment refractive error and visual acuity were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Average residual refractive error decreased from -2.40 D to -0.48 D.
  • Final uncorrected visual acuity improved significantly, with all patients achieving vision within one line of their preoperative best-corrected acuity.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No corneal neovascularization or RK incision vascularization was observed.
  • Conclusions:

    • Excimer laser keratectomy presents a safe and predictable option for correcting undercorrected myopia after radial keratotomy.
    • This technique offers improved visual outcomes and a controlled approach compared to previous augmentation methods.
