Summary

Pigmenting pityriasis alba (PPA) is a skin condition often linked to fungal infections. Treatment with griseofulvin and hydrocortisone showed promising results in resolving PPA lesions.

Background:

  • Pityriasis alba is a common, benign skin condition, typically presenting with hypopigmented, scaly patches.
  • Pigmenting pityriasis alba (PPA) is a less common variant with distinct morphological features.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical characteristics, potential associations, and treatment outcomes of pigmenting pityriasis alba.
  • To explore the histopathological and immunohistochemical findings in PPA.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 20 patients diagnosed with PPA over two years.
  • Clinical assessment of lesion morphology and distribution.
  • Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical labeling of biopsy specimens.
  • Evaluation of treatment response to griseofulvin and hydrocortisone.

  • PPA presented with central bluish hyperpigmentation and a hypopigmented, scaly halo, predominantly on the face.

  • Pigmenting pityriasis alba appears to be a variant of pityriasis alba strongly associated with dermatophyte infections.
  • The findings suggest a potential link between PPA, fungal infections, and lichenoid melanodermatitis.
  • Antifungal therapy is a crucial component in managing PPA associated with dermatophyte infections.
