    Summary

Vitrectomy surgery for ocular trauma achieved a successful outcome in two thirds of 15 patients. Penetrating injuries and retinal detachment were linked to poorer results in this study.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Trauma Surgery

    Background:

    • Ocular trauma presents a significant challenge in ophthalmology.
    • Vitrectomy is a key surgical intervention for severe eye injuries.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of vitrectomy in patients with ocular trauma.
    • To identify factors associated with successful and unsuccessful surgical results.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 15 consecutive ocular trauma cases undergoing vitrectomy.
    • Classification of cases based on the primary site of injury (anterior, posterior, or both segments).

    Main Results:

    • An overall successful outcome was observed in two thirds of the patients.
    • Factors associated with poor outcomes included penetrating injuries and total retinal detachment with massive preretinal retraction.

    Conclusions:

    • Vitrectomy can be effective in managing ocular trauma.
    • Early identification of risk factors like penetrating injuries is crucial for managing patient expectations and treatment planning.
