Summary

The maze procedure effectively treats refractory atrial fibrillation in selected patients, restoring sinus rhythm and eliminating the need for antiarrhythmic medications in 100% of cases by 3 months post-operation.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Cardiac Surgery

Background:

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia with significant morbidity.
  • Refractory AF significantly impacts quality of life and can lead to severe complications.
  • Existing antiarrhythmic medications have limited efficacy and potential side effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the maze procedure for patients with refractory atrial fibrillation.
  • To assess the long-term outcomes of the maze procedure in terms of rhythm control and quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • The maze procedure was performed on 14 patients with refractory atrial fibrillation between January 1991 and May 1992.
  • Patients had a mean age of 48 years and a mean AF duration of 7 years.
  • Outcomes were assessed by rhythm status, medication use, and complications.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 100% of patients achieved "cure" (sinus rhythm or p-wave tracking with ventricular pacing) by 3 months post-operation.
  • No patients required antiarrhythmic medications post-procedure.
  • Complications included temporary fluid retention (36%) and need for pacemakers in 2 patients (14%). Operative mortality was 7%.

Conclusions:

  • The maze procedure is a highly effective treatment for selected patients with refractory atrial fibrillation.
  • Despite being an extensive operation, it offers a definitive solution for severe AF sequelae.
  • Long-term follow-up demonstrates sustained rhythm control and improved patient outcomes.
