Large volume paracentesis (LVP) significantly improves lung volumes in cirrhotic patients with ascites. This safe procedure enhances breathing capacity without negatively impacting airflow or gas exchange.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Pulmonology
  • Medical Procedures

Background:

  • Ascites in cirrhotic patients can impair pulmonary function.
  • Large volume paracentesis (LVP) is a common treatment for ascites.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of LVP on pulmonary function in patients with cirrhosis and tense ascites.

Main Methods:

  • Eight hemodynamically stable cirrhotic patients with tense ascites underwent LVP (5-L aspiration).
  • Pulmonary function parameters including lung volumes, airflow, diffusing capacity, and arterial oxygenation were measured before and after LVP.

Main Results:

  • LVP significantly increased lung volumes, with expiratory reserve volume showing a 105% increase.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Vital capacity, functional residual capacity, and total lung capacity also increased significantly post-LVP.
  • Airflow, diffusing capacity, and arterial oxygenation remained unchanged after LVP.
  • Conclusions:

    • LVP effectively increases lung volumes in cirrhotic patients with ascites.
    • The procedure does not significantly alter airflow or gas exchange parameters.
