Summary

Radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer offers a good prognosis but can lead to significant long-term constipation. Over 20% of patients experience chronic constipation, a complication often overlooked but treatable.

Background:

Radical hysterectomy (Wertheim procedure) is a standard treatment for cervical cancer.
While effective for cancer, potential long-term morbidity requires investigation.

Observation:

A retrospective study surveyed 48 patients who underwent hysterectomy between 1975-1990.
A 83% response rate yielded data from 40 patients regarding post-operative bowel function.

Findings:

Over 20% of patients developed chronic constipation post-hysterectomy.
Reported issues include infrequent defecation (18%), straining (33%), cramps (13%), laxative use (20%), hard stools (48%), and manual assistance (40%).

Surgical interventions may offer successful treatment for affected patients.
