Overweight--a common problem among women treated for hyperthyroidism

Summary

About 50% of women treated for diffuse toxic goitre experienced weight gain post-treatment. This weight gain was linked to pre-existing body mass index (BMI) and warrants informing patients about potential risks and offering lifestyle support.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Metabolic Health
  • Thyroid Disease Management

Background:

  • Diffuse toxic goitre (hyperthyroidism) affects numerous women.
  • Post-treatment weight changes are a significant concern for patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prevalence of overweight issues in women after diffuse toxic goitre treatment.
  • To identify factors associated with post-treatment weight gain.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was sent to 112 women treated for diffuse toxic goitre.
  • A clinical follow-up was conducted on 32 women 4 years post-treatment.
  • Weight changes were assessed and correlated with pre-treatment BMI and other factors.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Approximately 50% of responders reported weight problems.
  • 27 out of 32 women at follow-up had increased weight compared to their estimated premorbid weight.
  • Weight gain correlated with estimated premorbid body mass index (BMI), but many with ideal BMI also gained weight.
  • Conclusions:

    • Women treated for hyperthyroidism face a significant risk of weight gain.
    • Early patient education on potential weight gain and lifestyle support is recommended.
    • Further research may explore the mechanisms behind weight gain in euthyroid states post-hyperthyroidism.
