Summary

Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) is a safe and effective treatment for appendicitis, with outcomes comparable to open appendectomy (OA). LA offers similar complication rates and length of stay but with potentially lower costs.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Procedures
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency.
  • Appendectomy is the standard treatment.
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) has emerged as an alternative to open appendectomy (OA).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the outcomes of concurrently performed laparoscopic versus open appendectomy for suspected acute appendicitis.
  • To evaluate operative duration, postoperative stay, complication rates, and costs.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective comparison of patients undergoing LA and OA.
  • Data collected included demographics, operative details, complications, length of stay, and costs.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • LA had similar operative times to OA but shorter than laparoscopic-assisted open appendectomy (LO).
  • Overall complication rates were significantly lower for LA (10.6%) and OA (18.9%) compared to LO (46.7%).
  • Median hospital costs were comparable for LA and OA, but higher for LO.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy is a safe and effective procedure for acute appendicitis.
  • LA offers comparable results to OA with no significant overall cost differences.
  • LA may be preferred when available due to lower overall complication rates compared to LO.
