    Summary

    Polymorphonuclear neutrophils show reduced function in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Both phagocytic index and nitro-blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction tests were significantly lower in patients compared to controls.

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease.
    • Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) play a role in inflammation and immune response.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the endocytic and metabolic functions of PMNs in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
    • To compare PMN function in RA patients with healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • In vitro phagocytic index test (Brandt's technique).
    • In vitro nitro-blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test (Braehner & Nathan's technique).
    • Study included 45 RA patients and control subjects.

    Main Results:

    • PMNs from RA patients exhibited a significantly decreased phagocytic index compared to controls.
    • NBT reduction test showed a significant decrease in RA patients, particularly in stimulated leukocytes.
    • Findings contrast with some previous studies using different methodologies.

    Conclusions:

    • Blood PMNs in rheumatoid arthritis patients demonstrate functional modifications.
    • These functional changes in PMNs may contribute to the pathogenesis of RA.
    • The study highlights the importance of specific testing techniques for evaluating PMN function in RA.
