Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Gastric polyps are common findings during upper endoscopy.
  • Histological classification is crucial for diagnosis and management.
  • Previous studies have not identified significant demographic or endoscopic predictors of polyp type.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the experience with gastric polypoid lesions over eight years.
  • To determine the prevalence of different polyp types and their distribution.
  • To investigate potential correlations between clinical/endoscopic findings and histological types, and explore ethnic variations.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 188 gastric polyps from a university hospital.
  • Analysis of clinical, endoscopic, and histological data.
  • Comparison of polyp characteristics across demographic groups, including ethnic background.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Hyperplastic polyps (45.2%) and inflammatory polyps (29.3%) were the most frequent types.
  • Gastric carcinoma was found in 10 cases, and adenoma in 6 cases.
  • Polyps were equally distributed in the gastric body (44.7%) and antrum (48.9%), with rare fundic involvement (6.3%).
  • No clinical or endoscopic features reliably predicted polyp histology.
  • A higher incidence of gastric polyps was noted in Ashkenazi Jews compared to non-Ashkenazi Jews, with similar sex distribution.

Conclusions:

  • Histological examination remains essential for definitive gastric polyp diagnosis.
  • Gastric polyp distribution is primarily in the body and antrum.
  • This study highlights a novel finding of increased gastric polyp incidence among Ashkenazi Jews.
