    Summary

    Basal energy expenditure in azotemia was studied in rats. After adjusting for body weight, azotemic rats showed no significant difference in oxygen consumption compared to controls, suggesting normal energy expenditure.

    Background:

    • Azotemia, a condition characterized by abnormal levels of nitrogenous waste products in the blood, may affect metabolic processes.
    • Basal energy expenditure (BEE) is a critical indicator of metabolic rate and overall physiological function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether basal energy expenditure is altered in azotemia.
    • To determine if oxygen consumption, a measure of energy expenditure, differs between azotemic and control subjects.

    Main Methods:

    • Partially nephrectomized rats (azotemic group) and sham-operated control rats were studied.
    • Oxygen consumption was measured at 10, 16, and 31 days post-surgery.
    • Oxygen consumption data were analyzed in relation to body weight.

    Main Results:

    • Azotemic rats exhibited decreased oxygen consumption, which correlated with their reduced body weight.
    • When oxygen consumption was normalized to body weight, no significant differences were observed between the azotemic and control groups.
    • This indicates that the observed decrease in oxygen consumption was primarily due to lower body mass.

    Conclusions:

    • Basal energy expenditure, as assessed by weight-adjusted oxygen consumption, does not appear to be significantly abnormal in this model of azotemia.
    • The findings suggest that metabolic rate is maintained in the presence of azotemia when corrected for body size.
