    Summary

    Rheumatoid arthritis patients show higher rates of esophageal dilation compared to healthy individuals. This finding suggests a potential link between rheumatoid arthritis and esophageal conditions, termed "rheumatoid esophageal disease".

    Background:

    • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease primarily affecting joints.
    • Potential extra-articular manifestations of RA are increasingly recognized.
    • Esophageal involvement in RA has been an area of limited investigation.

    Observation:

    • Esophageal diameters were radiographically assessed in 43 RA patients and 43 matched healthy controls.
    • The study compared the incidence of esophageal dilatation between the two groups.
    • Correlations were explored between esophageal dilatation and RA disease characteristics.

    Findings:

    • Esophageal dilatation occurred significantly more frequently in RA patients (P < 0.01).
    • Higher incidences were observed in RA patients with pulmonary fibrosis (P < 0.01) and subcutaneous nodules (P < 0.05).
    • A dose-dependent relationship was noted between esophageal dilatation and RA test grade, joint x-ray stage, and disease duration.

    Implications:

    • The findings suggest a distinct entity, termed "rheumatoid esophageal disease."
    • Esophageal assessment may be valuable in managing RA patients, particularly those with specific complications.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the pathophysiology and clinical significance of this association.
