Summary

Radiographic findings in intestinal Behçet disease (BD) show deep ulcers in the ileum that heal and recur with medical treatment. Serial imaging reveals dynamic changes, mimicking Crohn disease.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Radiology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Intestinal Behçet disease (BD) is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Characteristic radiographic findings and their evolution in nonsurgical intestinal BD are not well-defined.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the typical radiographic findings and serial changes in nonsurgical intestinal Behçet disease.
  • To compare radiographic manifestations with treatment response over time.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of seven patients with nonsurgical intestinal BD.
  • Serial radiographic examinations including barium meal studies and double-contrast barium enema radiography over an average follow-up of 4.5 years.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Initial radiography revealed deep ulcers in the terminal ileum/ileocecal region in five patients, which healed and recurred with medical therapy.
  • Follow-up radiography showed dynamic changes, including enlarged or new ulcers alongside healed ones.
  • Two patients presented with diffuse colonic ulcers that responded well to treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Serial radiographic changes in intestinal BD can mimic Crohn disease.
  • Findings in the terminal ileum and colon exhibit variability and fluctuate with medical management.
