Summary

This study analyzed 81 women with Fallopian tube cancer from 1980-1990. Early-stage cancers (I and II) had a significantly better 5-year survival rate (75%) than advanced stages (III and IV) at 17%.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Epidemiology
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Primary Fallopian tube carcinoma is a rare gynecologic malignancy.
  • Understanding its incidence and prognostic factors is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the current state of diagnosis and treatment for Fallopian tube cancer in Austria.
  • To identify prognostic factors and survival rates based on a multi-center retrospective analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective multi-center analysis of 81 patients diagnosed between 1980 and 1990.
  • Staging according to the modified FIGO system for ovarian cancer.
  • Surgical interventions included hysterectomy, adnexa/omentum removal, and lymph node dissection.

Main Results:

  • The mean patient age was 62.1 years.
  • Tumor distribution: Stage I (45.7%), Stage II (19.8%), Stage III (23.4%), Stage IV (11.1%).
  • Five-year survival rates were 75% for Stages I/II and 17% for Stages III/IV.

Conclusions:

  • Early detection and treatment of Fallopian tube carcinoma significantly improve survival rates.
  • Adjuvant therapies like irradiation and chemotherapy were employed post-operatively.
  • Further research is needed to optimize management strategies for this rare cancer.
