Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Digestive Surgery

Background:

  • Total gastrectomy for gastric sarcoma or carcinoma can lead to severe alkaline esophagitis.
  • Digestive continuity reconstruction techniques like Omega loop and Moricca esophagojejunostomy may not prevent reflux complications.

Observation:

  • Two patients developed severe alkaline esophagitis post-total gastrectomy with different reconstruction methods.
  • Initial reconstructions included Omega loop and Moricca esophagojejunostomy.

Findings:

  • Both patients required reoperation due to persistent reflux-related problems.
  • Conversion to Roux-en-Y esophagojejunostomy successfully resolved the esophagitis and reflux symptoms.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Roux-en-Y esophagojejunostomy is confirmed as the optimal procedure for preventing and treating alkaline esophagitis after gastrectomy.
  • This surgical approach significantly improves the quality of life and nutritional status of affected patients.
