Background:

  • The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is crucial for processing and transporting molecules within liver cells.
  • Understanding how the ER sorts molecules like glucuronides is vital for liver function and detoxification.

Observation:

  • In vitro studies using sealed liver microsomes measured substrate entry and glucuronide export.
  • Liver microsomes from a jaundiced patient showed bilirubin glucuronides accumulating within the ER lumen.

Findings:

  • Newly synthesized 1-naphthol glucuronide was exported from microsomes.
  • Bilirubin glucuronide, however, accumulated within the ER, indicating selective sorting.
