Summary

Radiographic maxillary sinus findings like mucosal thickening were common in elderly individuals. A higher prevalence in those with natural teeth suggests potential odontogenic causes for some findings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of radiographic maxillary sinus findings in elderly subjects.
  • To explore potential associations between dental status (edentulous vs. dentate) and these sinus findings.

Main Methods:

  • Panoramic radiography was used to examine 293 elderly subjects aged 76, 81, and 86.
  • Subjects were categorized based on their dentition: edentulous in both jaws, edentulous maxilla, or having at least one natural tooth.

  • Mucous cysts or diffuse mucosal thickenings were observed in 12% of the subjects.
  • Mucosal thickenings were significantly more prevalent (70%) in subjects with a dentate upper jaw (p < 0.05).
  • Mucous cyst prevalence (5%) was similar in dentate and edentulous maxilla groups, suggesting non-odontogenic origins.

Conclusions:

  • A significant proportion of maxillary sinus mucosal thickenings in the elderly may be of odontogenic origin, especially in individuals with natural teeth.
  • Mucous cysts in the maxillary sinus appear to have non-odontogenic causes, irrespective of the patient's dentition status.
