Summary

Electroencephalography (EEG) in cerebral malaria patients showed diffuse cortical dysfunction with theta and delta waves. A single EEG is insufficient for prognosis, but serial EEGs may offer more insight.

Background:

  • Cerebral malaria is a severe complication of malaria.
  • Neurological manifestations in cerebral malaria are common but complex.
  • Electroencephalography (EEG) is a tool to assess brain activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of initial electroencephalography (EEG) in predicting the clinical course and outcome of cerebral malaria.
  • To identify specific EEG patterns associated with cerebral malaria.
  • To explore the role of EEG in differentiating cerebral malaria from other neurological conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) was conducted on 13 male patients with cerebral malaria within 24 hours of admission.
  • A 10-channel, 10-20 system EEG machine was used with 6 montages for 20-minute recordings.

  • Clinical data, including seizures and outcomes, were correlated with EEG findings.

    • EEG patterns primarily showed theta and delta waves, indicating diffused cortical dysfunction.
    • No epileptic patterns were observed, even in patients with a history of seizures.

    • A single EEG recording upon admission has limited value in predicting the clinical course or outcome of cerebral malaria.
    • Serial EEG recordings may provide more prognostic information.
    • EEG can be valuable in excluding other cerebral pathologies like space-occupying lesions or epilepsy in malaria patients presenting with neurological symptoms.
