Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Reproductive Health

Background:

  • Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder affecting individuals of reproductive age.
  • Pregnancy and childbirth can present unique challenges for women with schizophrenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence and timing of psychotic episodes in women with schizophrenia during pregnancy and postpartum.
  • To highlight the importance of specialized care for pregnant women with schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • A catamnestic (follow-up) study was conducted.
  • Data were collected from 919 women diagnosed with schizophrenia who gave birth after their first episode.

Main Results:

  • 12.2% of patients experienced a new psychotic breakdown related to childbirth.
  • The majority (11.9%) decompensated in the postpartum period (within 6 months).
  • A small percentage (0.32%) experienced episodes during early pregnancy (first trimester).

Conclusions:

  • Childbirth is a significant risk factor for psychotic relapse in women with schizophrenia.
  • Postpartum decompensation is more common than antepartum episodes.
  • Integrated pharmacological and psychotherapeutic management is essential for pregnant schizophrenic women.
