Area of Science:

  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Reproductive Health

Background:

  • Anaphylaxis to human seminal fluid (HSF) is an uncommon allergic reaction.
  • Atopic individuals may be at higher risk for developing HSF allergy.

Observation:

  • A woman with a history of atopy presented with postcoital cutaneous and respiratory symptoms.
  • Physical examination and allergy testing were performed.

Findings:

  • Prick-prick testing to HSF yielded a positive result.
  • Specific IgE testing (CAP assay) for HSF was also positive, showing 4 KU/l.
  • The patient's symptoms were consistent with an allergic response to HSF.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering HSF allergy in patients with suggestive symptoms.
