Effect of L-dopa on polycythemia

Y Herishanu, P Rosenberg

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society
    |May 1, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

Levodopa (L-dopa) treatment improved Parkinson's disease symptoms and polycythemia vera in a patient. Further trials showed similar positive effects on polycythemia, suggesting a potential central therapeutic role for L-dopa.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Hematology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder.
    • Polycythemia vera (PV) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm.
    • Co-occurrence of PD and PV presents unique therapeutic challenges.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of Levodopa (L-dopa) on both Parkinson's disease symptoms and polycythemia vera.
    • To explore a potential central therapeutic mechanism of L-dopa in managing these conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Case study of a patient with known PV and newly diagnosed PD.
    • Treatment administered: L-dopa combined with a decarboxylase inhibitor (Madopar).
    • Therapeutic trial of the same L-dopa preparation in two additional PV patients.

    Main Results:

    • Significant improvement in parkinsonian symptoms observed.
    • Marked amelioration of polycythemia vera following L-dopa treatment.
    • Similar positive effects on polycythemia noted in the other two patients.

    Conclusions:

    • L-dopa may exert a beneficial effect on polycythemia vera, beyond its known efficacy in Parkinson's disease.
    • The findings suggest a possible central therapeutic role for L-dopa in managing PV.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying L-dopa's impact on hematological parameters.
